The Public Safety and Policing Work Group was created in May 2015 by the Senate President and House Speaker. Specifically, the Work Group focused on police training resources, and recruiting and hiring practices; and the need for a statewide oversight panel for certain kinds of investigations. Further, it considered the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights - how it is applied in different jurisdictions; and the community engagement policies of police agencies.

In January 2016, the Work Group submitted its final report with recommendations for proposed legislation in the 2016 legislative session.
