The head of each of Maryland's twenty-two departments (except for Education) is the Secretary. Appointed by the Governor with Senate advice and consent, the Secretary serves at the Governor's pleasure (Constitution, Art. II, secs. 10 through 14; Code State Government Article, secs. 8-201 through 8-206, 8-302, 8-305).
The State Department of Education is headed by the State Board of Education. The Board appoints to a four-year term the State Superintendent of Schools, who directs the Department (Code Education Article, secs. 2-101 through 2-305).
