The Department acquires, develops, and maintains a wide range of parklands and open spaces for public use and benefit. Through a joint-use agreement with the County Board of Education and County Public Schools, public schools also serve as community recreation centers (Code Local Government Article, secs. 1-601 through 1-611; County Charter, secs. 531-532; County Code, secs. 3-2-1501 through 3-2-15, 30-1-101 through 30-2-103).
Appointed by the County Executive, the Board consists of ten members: one from each Councilmanic district, and three additional members (Code Local Government Article, sec. 1-606; County Charter, sec. 533; County Code, secs. 30-3-1701 through 30-3-1705).

BOARD OF RECREATION & PARKS
The Board of Recreation and Parks was authorized in 1958. It formulates plans and policies for public recreation; the organization of recreation councils; the establishment of recreation programs; and the acquisition, management, preservation, and development of all lands, waters, buildings and other facilities in the County as parks and recreation areas and facilities.
