ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS


DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the County's public facilities; its transportation network; and water, wastewater and solid waste management services (County Charter, sec. 407; County Code, sec. 16-25).

The Department operates through three divisions: Construction Management, Highways and Water Resources, and Water and Sewer. The Department also is aided by the Environmental Advisory Board and the Public Works Advisory Board.

DIVISION OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
The Construction Management Division manages and constructs capital projects, and is responsible for stormwater management and sediment control (County Code, secs. 214-1 through 214-49).

Under the Division, the Materials and Testing Laboratory inspects and tests for quality control all construction materials used on County construction projects

DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS & WATER RESOURCES
The Highways and Water Resources Division constructs and maintains County roads, bridges, and related structures, and is responsible for traffic safety, and water resources management.

DIVISION OF WATER & SEWER
The Water and Sewer Division manages water and wastewater treatment plants.
