In June 2009, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean was organized. The Council operates under an agreement signed by the governors of the participating states on June 4, 2009. The Governors of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia committed their states to work together towards common goals and priorities related to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Council works to regionally coodinate the protection of important habitats and sensitive, unique offshore areas, and improve the Mid-Atlantic's coastal water quality through infrastructure investment. Through a regional approach, the Council also supports the sustainable development of renewable energy offshore, and prepares for the impact of climate change.
Each of the five coastal Mid-Atlantic states designates a representative to serve on the Management Board. Every two years, the position of chair rotates among the states.
The Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean was established in June 2019 by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean. The Committee was formed to enhance the vitality of the region's ocean ecosystem and economy through increased communication and collaboration.
Members include representatives from the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia; and from federal government agencies: the Shinnecock Indian Nation; and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
