Born in Frostburg, Maryland, August 17, 1937. Attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire ; Princeton University, B.A., 1959; University of Virginia School of Law, J.D., 1963. Served in U.S. Army (paratrooper); Maryland National Guard. Law clerk to Chief Judge Simon E. Sobeloff, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, 1963-64. Attorney, Smith, Somerville & Case, 1964-70; Miles and Stockbridge, 1975-88. Founding Managing Partner, Baltimore branch, Hogan & Hartson, LLP, 1988-98. Member, Maryland State Bar Association. Member, Maryland Judicial Campaign Conduct Committee, Inc., 2014. Life member, National Association of Former United States Attorneys. Former president, Maryland Club. Married; one daughter, three stepchildren, sixteen grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. Died in Naples, Florida, January 15, 2017.
